Project Stephanie

My good friend Stephanie asked me for style advice and I thought it was perfect to share with my readers. Stephanie has a pencil skirt she wants to wear to a friend's birthday dinner, but isn't sure what shirt to pair with it.
The first tip I like to give when wearing a pencil skirt is to wear a shirt or blouse that can be tucked into the skirt. This will elongate the body. Your look will look complete and the eye will move consistently from head to toe. Another key to elongate a petite body is to keep the hem of the skirt just above the knee cap. When the knee is covered, short people look shorter.

Let's take this pencil skirt from Forever 21...

....Only $17.80!

Add interest to your outfit with textured ruffles. Like in this tank from Gap for $29.50....

If you're wearing this outfit to work add a blazer. When you're out at night, remove the blazer and you still have a great outfit. Too causal?...

Try this ruffle top from Forever 21 for $17.80.

I love this color! It's vibrant and electric and not to mention the texture and interest all the ruffles and pleats add. You're bound to catch the cutest guy's eye if you're out in this top!
I'm not sure I would wear a jacket or sweater over this, but if you're absolutely freezing, as most people are in the north, wear a stylish cardi-wrap.

This cardi-wrap, from BCBG, is a classic sweater to have in your wardrobe. It's a nice twist to a boring cardigan sweater and won't cover up the beautiful details of the blouse above. Can't afford BCBG? Don't worry, most places like Forever 21 have knock-off cardigan wraps similar to the one pictured above.

I'm going to add another skirt to this article.

I found this Forever 21 skirt for $19.80 and thought it was great if you're not someone who likes wearing tight skirts. This skirt has pleats to add room for movement and still has a very classic, sophisticated look about it.

To my dear friend Stephanie, I hope this helps you with your pencil skirt dilemma. I know you'll look gorgeous no matter what!

Red Carpet Critic: SAG edition

Saturday night was the 16th annual SAG awards. I was less than impressed with the dresses on this red carpet event, so I'm gonna be negative nancy this time and point out the fashion don'ts. Feel free to laugh, gasp or gag...I did!

The 'blek' of the night goes to Julianna Margulies. Did she have a mirror....or a friend? There is no shape to this dress and it doesn't show off the curves I know she has. It really makes her look like she is one ball of velvet. If the designer, Narciso Rodriquez, would have used more draping and put more structure in the dress it would have looked much better.

Okay, so I get the asymmetrical look, but this dress looks like the hem is too short. And the color is washed out and faded. One thing that would help this dress is to make the right shoulder strapless instead of sleeveless. It looks like Calvin Klein didn't have enough time to put the other sleeve on. Overall...just weird!

Do your part to stimulate the economy....

...And buy these shoes! I should mention that I love shoes! It might even classify as an obsession. You could say that I have OSD, Obsessive Shoe Disorder. But I would never say it's a disorder, more like a way of life. I mean you can't hardly walk around without shoes on your feet. And as Carrie says in Sex and the City: "It's hard to walk in a single woman's shoes. That's why sometimes you need really special shoes."

And no better shoe to walk in than this platform by Victor & Rolf. This gets me so excited for spring! It's perfect to pair with a cute sundress. And I'm positive I need it for my Easter outfit.
Now if you like over kill, which I do, see below...

Voila! I am in LOVE with this shoe! Again by Victor & Rolf. You gotta be careful with this shoe though. You want to pair it with a very simple dress, jewelry and hand bag to balance your overall look.

No one does shoes better than Manolo Blahnik! Case and point above. The buttons going up the front give the shoe a Victorian look. How great would these look with a Chanel suit? It's on my list of shoes to buy because they're perfect for spring when it's wet outside. It's a closed toe platform, so your feet will stay dry.

Are you someone that complains about wearing heels? First I would tell you to suck it up and then I would tell you to get these Valentino flats because they're super cute!  This sandal is a gladiator with a feminine touch and would be great to wear at a beach where, unfortunately, heels should not be worn.

I have given you a list of dream shoes, a list every woman should have even if you can't afford anything on that list. It's good to aim high!

A new reason to love Nordstrom!

As I was perusing the Nordstrom website, I came across their dress for your shape page. They have their dresses catergorized by the body shape they look best on! Your shopping just got better and easier. No more wasting time trying on dresses that don't flatter your figure.

Go to http://www.nordstrom.com/ then click on 'women.' Next click on 'dress shop' on the left and then choose your body type from the drop down menu. From there you can also seperate by price, style and trend!

How easy is that? Just when I thought Nordstrom couldn't make a shopping experience better, they do!

Enjoy! :)

Red Carpet Critic: Golden Globes Edition

It was a good night for fashion at the 67th annual Golden Globes. The stars were decked out in elegant and chic couture dresses with stunning jewelry to boot. The female cast of AMC's Mad Men were some of the best dressed on the red carpet. Christina Hendricks shows off her beautiful curves in this gown by Christian Siriano, and that peach color couldn't look better with her red hair and fair skin.

January Jones also looked beautiful on the red carpet in an elegant black dress by Lanvin. The dress has a simple silhouette, but the asymmetrical, satin collar adds texture and dimension to the dress. How cute does she look holding that umbrella?

This year the new comers to the Golden Globes seemed to be better dressed than the A-listers. My favorite example is Lea Michaels from Glee. She stands out in this black, strapless ball-gown by Oscar de la Renta. The ruffled detail on the skirt adds elegant detail along with the rouched bodice. Wearing Oscar is probably the best way to leave your mark on the red carpet.

I have my favorite looks narrowed down to two: Zoe Saldana and Kate Hudson.

Zoe looks gorgeous in this Louis Vuitton gown. The deep burgandy dress has a silhouette that reminds me of the victorian era. Ruffles, wrapping, gathering and strips of dangling fabric add depth and texture that keep your interest all the way to the train.

Kate Hudson looked dazzling in this white Marchesa gown. The pleating and folding detail on the bodice adds interest and is complimented with a simple, straight skirt. I'm glad she's holding her train up because we can see those amazing platform pumps by Casadei.

Shoe of the Month

It's January and it's gloomy. It's also the perfect time to starting thinking about SPRING! My favorite season! Everything comes to life during spring especially the fashion!

Snake skin is popular this spring. My favorite? BCBG. Zappos.com has the 'Aubrey' from BCBGeneration on sale for $85.00.

If you're not familiar with BCBG...well it's time you get acquainted! BCBG has several different lines at different price points. BCBGeneration and BCBGirl are two of their lower priced lines. BCBGMaxAzria, Max Azria and Herve Leger are their higher priced lines. Max Azria has also teamed up with Miley Cyrus for a Wal-Mart line. I'm not sure how I feel about this one 1. because it annoys me when celebrities put their name on a clothing line that they don't have any creative control over and 2. because it's Wal-Mart...it kind of tarnishes the name of MaxAzria.

What are you gonna wear these fabulous shoes with? Something simple. There's a lot of texture on this shoe so more texture and pattern would be too much. I love this white Converse dress from Target for only $29.99!

Every woman should have a great white dress in their wardrobe. *Please note: the shoes worn in this photo look like bowling shoes and should not be worn!
